Calitri - Panoramica dell'abitato
Downtown is the oldest and most attractive part of town.
Beginning with the 50s (and above all after the 1980 earthquake) the town has spread out abnormally.
Various factors have contributed to this recent development: autos could not access the old town because of its archaic layout of narrow streets, the unending restoration projects of older homes (many townspeople opted to build new dwellings elsewhere), emigration, which has always deprived the town of its more youthful resources resulting in drastic depopulation.
Today, Calitri has expanded chaotically as far as the Croce Penta area (on the road to Bisaccia), in a northwest direction.
The historical center gives the appearance of being forgotten, since it is inhabited mostly by a few senior citizens who stubbornly refuse to give up their native haunts.
The more ancient streets now serve as foot paths steeped in fascinating history.
.
