Moments
in the Good Friday procession |
|
| In
the 19th century, besides the forty or so priests in residence,
the mayor of Calitri, in concert with the Archpriest, would
invite a prominent preacher to deliver the Lenten sermons
for the entire Lenten season. |
| Meals,
regularly the bare essentials for most families, became even
more frugal; now vegetables and legumes, especially chick
peas, became the exclusive fare. |
|
Lent was more often the time for repeated fasts—even
among the well-to-do—and was observed strictly and uncompromisingly. |
| Large
crowds filled the churches: masses and vespers were celebrated;
there was much preaching and confessions were heard more frequently
than usual. |
