| GOOD
FRIDAY |
|
The procession to Mt. Calvary, arranged by the Confraternity
of the Immaculate Conception, took place before dawn so that
farmers who had to return to their fields could do so after
the service. |
| The
“brethren” started out from the church of the
Immaculate Conception when it was still dark and then proceeded,
slowly and solemnly, through the streets of town. |
| As
metaphorical “brothers” in Christ’s Passion,
they wore long white robes with a blue cord wrapped around
the waist. Their heads were covered by a white hood topped
by a crown of thorns. |
| In
former times, a drummer started off the cortege producing
a steady, gentle, sad beat resembling sobs. Then — as
is still the custom today — a crucifer headed the procession,
flanked by two brethren, each carrying a lighted lantern at
the top of a pole. |
| A
white sheet hung from the cross to symbolize Christ’s
burial shroud. |
