| Quarantana,
a symbol of the travails and sacrifices of Lent, was a stuffed rag
doll that looked like a hag in black weeds and made her appearance
on Ash Wednesday. |
Quarantana
was hung outside a window or by the main entrance and was not
supposed to be brought inside for fear it would bring bad luck.
The rag doll had a potato at her feet with six black feathers
corresponding to the six Sundays of Lent, plus a white one symbolizing
Easter. |
| Every
Sunday a black feather was removed until, on Easter, only the white
one remained—a symbol of light and life and of Christ’s
victory over death. |
