| Furthermore,
a few women, who had such a task for tradition, used to prepare,
in the established points, a wooden table (b'ffetta)
adorned with embroidered drapes, on which they leaned the statue
during the prayer and the offering of incense made by the parson. |
| The
musical band played religious hymns or pieces of operas, which were
always much liked. |
| At
evening, the music in the square was listened by few people: they
preferred to chat up with friends till late. |
| The
stalls enriched the evening with colours and noises. |
| The
crowd was packed in the main street and in the square, to disappear
as soon as fireworks began, when everybody hurried up to reach the
best places to enjoy the show. |
| During
the fireworks one could easily listen to the speeches between the
balconies, as well as the mournful notes of some barrel organ played
on St Anthony bridge. |
| Punctually
the Serra was set on fire (the wood of the Calvary dominating the
little church of St Lucy) where the fires were shot, and every year
the procurators, armed with branches and hoes, had to put out the
fire, among the unfailing complaints of the damaged. |
