| The most serious and terrible enchantment that entailed the worst
malicious effect was obsession or possession. |
| It was widely believed that obsession was not the result of human
willpower but of an evil and superhuman mind. |
| To indicate that a person was obsessed, in Calitri they would
say that a person was possessed body and soul by the devil, and
that such a person had to be exorcised. |
| The Church, while admitting the possibility that an evil spirit
could take possession of an individual, customarily gave certain
priests the authority to exorcise persons that were obsessed. |
