LU PRIGGIONIER'
Nu bell' g'v'nott',
chi è fatt' priggionier'
'n'ret' a nu destrier'
r' trott' a trasc'nà.
Lu portan' luntan'
v'cin' a 'na caverna
e 'nfunn' a 'na c'sterna
nu can' anna m'nà.
P' quegghia via, cuntenta,
'na ronna passa bella,
lu ver' a l'acqua 'nzella,
r' spenta adda t'rà.
Lu piglia a p' nu vrazz',
lu porta a la capanna,
l'aggiusta 'ndà 'na banna
lu jazz' a p' p'sa.
Che nott' t'mb'stosa,
che suonn' travaglius',
lu maschk' ver' fus'
'stà sposa a s's'p'rà.
Quann' la scura mor'
e bben' appena juorn',
egghia s' vota attuorn'
signor' nn' c' stà.
Corr' a p' 'ndà la via
r' mman' a li capigghij'
lu trova, p'v'riegghij',
chi stia a r'p'tà.
E 'mbiett' s' lu caccia
lu streng' accussì fort':
- 'Nnant' v'rrìa la mort'
si paccia aggia campà.
E probbia tann', a guerra,
squadron' haluppann',
cu ddoij' frecc' v'lann',
la terra a r' annaspà.

A Calitrian sunset
A Calitrian sunset
THE PRISONER
A handsome youth
Is taken prisoner
And dragged behind a trotting steed.
They take him far away.
Near a cave,
And deep in a well
They are going to drown him like a dog.
On that road comes a beautiful maiden
Who sees him floating in the water.
With a yank she pulls him back up.

With her arm she holds him up
and takes him to her hut,
Where she sets him down to rest
On a straw bed in a corner.

What a stormy night!
What restless sleep!
When night yields to daylight,
She looks for the young man,
But sees he is no longer there.
She runs out to the road,
Her hands wringing her hair.
At last she finds him,
He’s wailing and moaning.
She draws him to her bosom,
And hugs him with all her might.
I would rather die, she says,
Than have to live a life of torture.
But a squad of soldiers
Suddenly arrives at a gallop.
Two arrows, they let fly
And the couple drops to the ground.
