| The art of prophecy was complementary of the magical
art, in which many Calitrians believed. |
| People wanting to know about their future, about
health problems, business transactions, or advice
for their love affairs, preferred to consult seers
and fortune tellers. |
| These practitioners were not professionals interested
in gain but were content to be able to assist people
with the powers nature had endowed them with. |
| In Calitri by far the most important seers were
the astrologer and palmist. The former consulted his
astrology book and the latter read the lines of the
hand to make predictions. |
| The recipient of these prophecies would retain them
in his mind all his/her life, reflecting on them and
trying to discern a possible correlation with the
events of his/her life. |
| Thus a good and simple farmer, who happened to be
endowed with ESP, could be the cause of joy or sadness
in the lives of those who had consulted him. |
