| In
the past, Calitri had many churches, a majority of which were
small chapels. Historical and social events were generally
determining factors in the town’s architecture and planning. |
| These
factors also influenced the building of churches, many of
which were from time to time destroyed by earthquakes and
not always rebuilt. |
| The
Angevin influence, for example, led to the construction of
churches such as St. Michael's, St. Peter's, St. Anthony’s
(Sant’Antuono) and St. Mary’s (Santa Maria alla
ripa). |
| Toward
the end of the 15th century, in the Aragonese period, churches
were named after Saints that could overcome the plague: thus
St. Sebastian’s convent, and the churches of St. Sophia
and St. Rocco were founded. |
| These
churches were built outside the town limits, for fear of the
devastating effects of the epidemic. |
| After
the 15th century, the monastery of Our Lady of the Annunciation
along with the attached church, as well as the chapels of
St. Berard, St. Lucy and the Calvary were founded. Finally,
the Mother-Church was rebuilt and the little church of San
Nicola alla Posterla was created. |
